Equine Law Attorney in Florida
Professionally Handling your Equestrian Law Issues
What is Equine Law?
It is not a specific body of law, it is more of an industry niche in the practice of law. An equine lawyer is a practitioner who knows the equine industry (i.e. how they do business) and knows the laws that affect horse owners and businesses. Those in the horse world understand that there is a unique dynamic to the industry, and simply knowing the law is not sufficient to represent equine law clients. It is important that an equine lawyer understand and appreciate the nuances and intricacies within the industry. Equine Law includes all legal aspects of the horse industry and horse-related business, such as buying and selling; breeding; boarding; leasing horses; liability, such as that incurred by owners, trainers, riders and students; labor issues faced by owners and trainers; and much more. At the Law Office of Tauna R. Bogle, P.A., we can help clients with various legal matters surrounding their horses.
One area of Equine law that is very specifically written in Florida involves the buying, selling and leasing of horses. With one of the few laws in the country that outlines the legal issues when horse trading, it can raise issues regarding deception if not done properly. The laws are complex and require exact disclosure and documentation. We can prepare your documentation to ensure there is full disclosure and no chance of fraud due to failure to disclose information. Florida's stance on this issue is that a horse sale should be documented in the same way as real estate transactions.
We offer legal services for:
- Purchase and Sale Agreements
- Installment Sale Agreements
- Lease Agreements
- Breeding Contracts
- Liability Releases
- Training Agreements
- Horse Transportation Liability Releases and Agreements

Under Florida law, an equine activity sponsor or equine professional is not liable for an injury to, or the death of, a participant in equine activities resulting from the inherent risks of equine activities. However, there can be mitigating circumstances that would result in an individual having to defend themselves or their business or organization in such a case. In addition, if you were the party injured, you may possibly have a claim depending on the possible circumstances surrounding the accident.
Experience When It Matters Most
Megan Beley Withrow is an avid horse lover, rider and competitor. Horses always have been, and continue to be an intricate and special part of her life. When not in the office, Megan can always be found at the barn or in the show ring. Her introduction to the horse world came at a very young age when she received her first pony. As a child she competed in the hunter/ jumper ring and then dabbled in eventing as a teenager. While attending Sweet Briar College in Virginia, Megan, along with her horse (who also lived on campus) enjoyed regular shows, fox hunts, Hunter paces and riding and training at the college. For her senior thesis Megan drafted what she titled "Horse Imagery in Shakespeare." Today she continues to compete with her hunter jumpers and has expanded her interests to combined and pleasure driving. Megan is a member of the American Driving Society, The Florida Whips, United States Hunter Jumper Association (USHJA), and the United States Equestrian Federation. Many of her closest friends are also active members of the horse community. Being a true "horse person", Megan is able to combine a lifetime of horse experience with the law, providing those in the horse community with horse savvy legal representation.
Attorney Megan Beley Withrow has extensive experience with horses and horses related activities. She serves the communities of Charlotte County, Sarasota County and Desoto County in South Florida.
